A special 21-gun salute was held by Islington’s Honourable Artillery Company to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War.
The shots were fired at one minute intervals as crowds looked on the Tower of London’s ceramic poppy installation as the Last Post sounded.
At 9.10pm the first barrage was fired under the late evening sky and by the time the final round was fired 20 minutes later, day had become night.
