Family and friends of tragic Islington footballer Danny Payne have come together to remember his life with a special charity match.

Danny Payne, who grew up in Bewdley Street and played for a number of teams including Chapel Market Boys and Islington Kings, tragically died three years ago from lung cancer.

On Saturday September 21 dozens of his loved ones came together for a match at Market Road between two teams – Team Payne and Danny’s Boys – both named in his honour.

Before the match kicked off Danny, who was just 38 when he passed away, was remembered with a one minute silence.

The family also released two white doves and 41 red and white balloons in recognition of what would have been his 41st birthday.

Team Payne were the winners at full time having beaten their opponents 7-4.

Jaime Payne, Danny’s sister, said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to Joanne Thripp who helped to plan the entire day along and all the players and helpers.

“It was a really lovely turn out for Danny and quite emotional too, He would have been so proud of this day and we miss him so very much.”
