A project to stop old people in Islington from falling ill and dying in cold weather has been named one of the most innovative public services in Europe.

Islington Council’s seasonal health and affordable warmth team has clinched the European Prize for Innovation in Public Administration – beating rival entries from up to 40 different countries.

In the past two-and-a-half years, the team has worked with around 3,500 residents – helping them access 30 different services, such as improving their heating and insulation, getting tips on their energy bills and seeking out companionship.

The aim is to reduce the number of people who die or are admitted to hospital every winter.

The team has been awarded 100,000 euros in prize money to further develop the project.
