A children’s playground ravaged by fire in a suspected arson attack is set to be rebuilt.

The Three Corners Adventure Playground, in Spa Fields Park, which was used by over 300 children on a weekly basis was left in ruins after the blaze last week.

Islington Council was earlier criticised for the lack of protection and fencing surrounding the playground in Skinner Street, Finsbury, but has now pledged to replace the fire damaged play equipment.

Cllr Joe Caluori, Islington Council’s new executive member for children and families, said: “This mindless vandalism has caused a lot of distress and inconvenience for local families.

“I want them to know that we’re working hard to make sure that new equipment is installed and the playground gets back to normal as soon as possible.”

The rest of the playground was closed for one day after the blaze damaged the wooden adventure play structure.

“Children are desperate to have their adventure play structure back again,” Mr Caluori added.

“I know how much local children enjoy spending time at Three Corners Playground.”

The original play structure cost around £160,000 and involved young people with the design before it was ready for use.

Cllr Richard Watts, Islington Council’s executive member for finance and performance said they will be getting children and young people involved in the new designs over the next few weeks.

He said: “Although we don’t yet have the final costs of the repairs, they are likely to come to a substantial amount

“But we won’t let the vandals win and will get this much-valued community asset open for use again.”

Police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the fire.
