Children had a fun-filled taste of life on a building site as they laid bricks and raced in miniature-sized diggers in a newly-built square.
The youngsters also embarked on a treasure hunt and a tow path walk as they were treated to a host of activities at the Digger Day in Granary Square, King’s Cross.
Anthony Stagg, from construction company Carillion, was on hand to help them have a go at real bricklaying – which he said they took quite a shine to: “Once they saw real bricks and mortar, that was it. We never stopped all day.”
The event was part of the Open House weekend that saw sites across Islington open their doors to the public.
Organised by developers Argent, the firm behind Granary Square, it also included interactive walks around the site and a chance to view the vibrant ‘skip’ gardens – moveable veg and herb gardens planted in builder’s skips by children from Islington.
