LIKE many Islington residents I am extremely proud of the transformation that Islington's parks, open spaces and streets have undergone.

LIKE many Islington residents I am extremely proud of the transformation that Islington's parks, open spaces and streets have undergone.

The massive investment we have seen in parks and the wonderful flower displays, have brightened up our streets and roads.

As in 2008 and 2009 this year we will have seen the borough successfully compete in the London in Bloom competition. All the staff who have been involved in the floral displays should be thanked for making our lives so colourful.

They should be especially thanked for improving the drab and depressing A1, Angel and Holloway Road, which look wonderful festooned with flowers.

Sadly it is rather hypercritical for Councillor Hamitouche to sing the praises of these lovely displays ("A blooming good show", Gazette, August 26) when it is her and her Labour colleagues who have sounded the death knell for them and axed them. I wonder if she told the judges that the hanging baskets have been cut!

This year will be the last year we see these delightful floral displays, a very sad state of affairs in my view. Islington will be worse off as a result. - Lucy Farrugia, Blackstock Road, N4.
