Sprinter disappointed after frustrating Diamond League event

Newham & Essex Beagle James Ellington has no doubt that he can cut it with the best despite a disappointing outing at the Sainsbury’s Summer Grand Prix at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

Ellington raced in the 100m on Sunday but could not make an impact in the Midlands as he struggled in his heats and clocked 10.27 seconds to finish seventh.

However, Ellington believes that he has the tools to be competitive at a time when British sprinting looks to be welcoming a new batch of stars.

“I had a terrible start which really didn’t help me at all and that meant I was out of it from the beginning to be honest,” said Ellington.

“It’s not too bad all things considered but I’m not happy with the time or the way I executed the race from start to finish. Obviously there are a lot of quick guys in the 100m but I definitely feel like I can be competitive with them.

“I said a few weeks ago that I’ve just started coming off the longer races so it’s just a case of getting my sharpness back. You could see from the race that I just didn’t react to the others and didn’t have it quite there for me to do that.

“Once I get a few more races under my belt then I will be all good and I won’t be too worried until then.”
