Read Layth Yousif’s player ratings after Darren Sarll’s men beat Chesterfield 1-0 at the Proact Stadium.

Tom King – 7: Looked solid and his distribution has improved showing he has settled at the club while becoming more aware of the way the backline in front of him shapes up. Still needs to be more confident when claiming aerial balls.

Jonathan Smith – 7.5: Always gave his all in a no-nonsense display. Underrated but effective as he told me after the match his team-mates and he wouldn’t be celebrating as they were already focussing on Swindon at the Lamex on Tuesday. Model professional

Jack King – 7.5: Organised and committed. Never lets Stevenage FC down when he dons the red and white and showed his never-say-die attitude again against the Spireites.

Fraser Franks – 7.5: The consummate team man. Happy to slot in as the crucial deep-lying defensive shield after his heroics up front at Morecambe. Every team needs a Fraser Franks

Ben Kennedy – 8: The talented North Irishman always looks lively but perhaps need to deliver more end product at the end of his runs and when he cuts in. Needs to stay fit to get back to his best. Deserved his goal after all his hard work. Deserved the luck that went with it too. Fans will be hoping his injury isn’t too serious.

Danny Newton – 7.5: Intelligent from boss Darren Sarll to swap him with Matty Godden midway through the first half in an attempt to wrong-foot the Spireites defence. Might not have worked as well as they liked but more evidence of the fact there are footballers and managers at this level who can think for themselves.

Terence van Cooten – 7.5: Raw but talented. High hopes for the elegant former Reading 19-year-old as he earns a reputation as a ball-playing defender. What was good about him was that he wasn’t afraid to clear the ball long if required.

Matt Godden – 7: Wasn’t as influential as he would have liked after going wide as Newton went up top. Gave his all before he limped off to be replaced by Tom Conlon.

Ronnie Henry: – 7.5: Mr Consistency. Mr Dependable. Mr Reliable. But what do you expect from Boro’s captain every week? No wonder Sarll labelled him a true Stevenage legend. Great to see him celebrate the deserved win with the fans – as did all the players in a show of unity which was good to see.

Mark McKee – 7.5: Showed huge reserves of character in the heart of the battle. Great touch and technique but also showed controlled aggression and refused to take a backward step.

Ben Wilmot – 7: Raw but promising, he grew in stature during such a hard fought game.

Darren Sarll – 10: Copes with everything thrown at him and comes back for more. Passionate, but so much more than that. Deserves plaudits for not being afraid to tweak his system which he told me is 4-3-3 but with variations when required, Told Godden and Newton to swap in the first half, played two teenagers at the back in a tough League Two match and ended up throwing the physical Luke Wiilkinson up front when he lost his three forward to injury and fatigure. He told me after the match he cares deeply about Stevenage and was aiming to get back to the town in time to attend the 20th anniversary reunion of the team that played Newcastle at the Lamex tonight. Somebody buy this man a pint. And a few more players to boost the squad. He deserves both.

The 174 Stevenage fans who made the trip to Chesterfield and supported their team throughout – 10: True loyalty. It’s easy to support a glitzy side from afar. It’s more difficult to travel the length and breadth of the country to support their hometown team in League Two. The Boro lads and lasses here at Chesterfield today were simply Premier League.
