With Stevenage on the road at Chesterfield this weekend, it allows the perfect chance for fans to experience a wonderful night of nostalgia and fun.

An event called ‘Newcastle ‘98 Reunion’ is being held at the club on Broadhall Way on Saturday evening and provides the perfect excuse for supporters to relive one of the most important fixtures in their team’s history.

The night is being organised by former Boro forward Neil Trebble with special guests familiar to all Boro fans set to feature, including Paul Fairclough, Des Gallagher, Gary Crawshaw, Giuliano Grazioli, along with former Newcastle United players Rob Lee, Keith Gillespie, John Bereford and more.

It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago this week little old Stevenage Borough gripped the nation as they took on the mighty Newcastle United – Alan Shearer and all – led the by the legendary Kenny Daligish.

After a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup in front of more than 8,000 at a packed Lamex, which included a temporary stand to accommodate as many fans as possible, Boro made the trip up to the North East and performed valiantly in the replay, earning the respect of the nation as they ultimately bowed out with a 2-1 defeat.

Neil – or ‘Trebbs’ as everyone calls him – spoke to Comet Sport and shared his memories of that unforgettable time.

Sitting in Rump and Wade at the Cromwell Hotel in Stevenage Old Town, home-town boy Trebbs recalled with a smile: “It was a crazy time.

“As someone who grew up in Stevenage it was incredible to experience. The whole town was gripped by cup fever and the players were on national TV between the two matches.

“It was so surreal. Suddenly we were front and back page news across the country.

“We appeared on the Big Breakfast with Denise van Outen after the first game.

“We’d had quite a few drinks after the match and then literally got on the coach at 4am to go to the studio.

“There wasn’t enough space on the sofa next to her when they started filming. It looked like we all wanted to sit next to her, but I think it was more the fact we all felt so rough we just needed to sit down!

“So some of us had to stand and a mate saw me literally looking green on TV and asked if I had a hangover!

“We also met Noel Edmonds and Mr Blobby. Even Mr Blobby knew about the Boro!

“Mr Blobby started punching me in the stomach on the show. I tell you what, after he released that single of his I wished I’d punched him back!

“We were all so proud of what we did to put Stevenage on the map. I’d encourage fans to come down on Saturday night and enjoy a fun evening.

“We’ve got loads of fun things lined-up, including a quiz based on the Boro podcast ‘A Load Of Old Toffee’.”

The evening will be held in the The Broadhall Suite with tickets reasonably priced at £20, which includes a delicious buffet.
