North London boroughs have some of the lowest levels of home ownership in England and Wales, figures have revealed.
New data from the 2021 census shows that Islington, Hackney and Camden are among the bottom five local authority areas for home ownership.
A mere 27.1 per cent of Hackney residents, 28.4pc of Islington residents, and 30.4pc of Camden residents own a home.
This means that the number of renters in the three boroughs was among the highest both in London and across the UK, with almost 75pc of residents having social or private rents.
Hackney (40.5pc) and Islington (40.2pc) topped the list for the proportion of households which rent accommodation from their local authority area.
The figures reflected national trends, with census data showing a percentage increase in renting households, from 34.3pc in 2011 to 37.3pc in 2021.

Polly Neate, Shelter’s chief executive, said: “Predictably the number of private rented households in England has skyrocketed since 2011.
“Every day our emergency helpline hears from private renters paying through the nose for damp, mouldy homes, and families too scared to complain for fear they’ll be kicked out.
“The only lasting solution to our housing emergency is building more social homes.”
