Camden's Jazz Cafe has announced a new season of gigs ranging from globally renowned icons to emerging talent and artists making their UK debut.
The packed season includes Rap, RnB, Dub, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, Soul, Jazz and electronic music and celebrates talent as diverse as American rapper Armani Caesar - making her UK debut, the sons of Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil, multi-instrumentalist Courtney Pine, and an Arabic disco and reggae night by Habibi Funk featuring Lebanese artist Charif Megarbane.
Ruari Frew, Head of Programming at The Jazz Cafe commented: "We always aim to be inventive with our programming, placing a strong focus on the emerging landscape, both in the UK and internationally. The forthcoming autumn live series is no different, featuring a broad church of genres covering everything from rap, Afrobeats, dub to electronic. Many of the artists booked will be performing for the first time at the venue and also in the UK like emerging icons Armani Caesar and Durand Bernarr, sitting alongside legends like KEM and Evelyn Champagne King."
Old faces returning to the venue include Dub star Scientist, who plays on Halloween, the aforementioned disco queen Evelyn Champagne King for a three-night residency, RnB idol KEM, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters' playing a 50th Anniversary show, and a set by Jamiroquai keyboard virtuoso Matt Johnson.
UK debuts also include Durand Bernarr, who has worked alongside Grammy Award-winning artists Erykah Badu and Kaytranada; BADBADNOTGOOD collaborator Jonah Yano, Aboriginal Australian rising star singer Thelma Plum, and five-strong Swiss socio-politically minded collective Sirens Of Lesbos.
Beyond the home venue in Parkway, Camden Town, The Jazz Café is hosting takeover events across London. Ethiojazz legend Hailu Mergia performs his biggest show ever at Islington Assembly Hall on October 22, back in Camden, Buena Vista Social Club’s Eliades Ochoa takes centre stage with his album launch party at KOKO, where Turkish electro-acoustic trio Islandman also perform the following month.
EarTH in Hackney will host Adrian Sherwood’s 3D Live Dub Experience with their ground-breaking 360 soundsystem. And Pete Rock, & The Soul Brothers play the Electric Brixton.
Inauguaral Jazz Cafe performances see UK based jazz outfit Corto.alto and Croydon-based Jords with his hybrid of smooth hip-hop, R&B, and poetry. Fans of electronica will be excited to see Shackleton/Zimpel for their only UK performance this year.
