Fans of Kentish Town gastropub The Parakeet can look forward to comforting Sunday roasts flamed over their custom-made grill this autumn.

The former Oxford Tavern reopened in March following a major makeover - with a new name, exotic decor, and a dining room headed up by ex BRAT chefs Ben Allen and Ed Jennings.

Conjuring dishes cooked over an open fire, their menu was enthusiastically reviewed by critics including Jay Rayner, Fay Maschler, Giles Coren, and the Evening Standard's Jimi Famurema.

Now the pub, which is owned by the folk behind Camden's Jazz Cafe and Blues Kitchen, is launching a seasonal Sunday roast menu.

Flame grilled leg of lamb for four; pre-brined chicken, roasted in hay for a smoky flavour; and salt aged roast topside beef are among their fresh takes on the traditional roast dinner. Both the beef and a lamb rump are cooked over charcoal and wood, as is the veggie-friendly celeriac wellington.

Roasts are all served with generous portions of spring greens, potatoes roasted with herbs and garlic, seasonal root veg, Yorkshire pudding, and carrot and swede puree.

The 60-cover dining room in Kentish Town Road will also serve a selection of small plates including house pickles, potato bread and smoked butter, and poached oyster with pickled alexander and apple. Desserts aren't forgotten with sticky toffee pudding, and a selection of UK cheeses on the menu.

The wine list centres around biodynamic and low intervention wines from producers including Seasmoke, J. Rochioli and Jayne Ayre.

Allen and Jennings are keen on careful sourcing, using produce farmed in harmony with nature. The veg hails from Flourish, a regenerative Cambridgeshire farm growing heritage crops in a way that captures carbon and soil nutrients; lamb comes from The Cornwell Project, which puts female sheep to pasture in woodland giving them extra flavour and improving soil health, and cattle is raised by Farm Wilder, a social enterprise which farms in a regenerative way.Islington Gazette: The former Oxford Tavern in Kentish Town Road reopened in March with a new name and acclaimed menu under ex BRAT chefs Ben Allen and Ed JenningsThe former Oxford Tavern in Kentish Town Road reopened in March with a new name and acclaimed menu under ex BRAT chefs Ben Allen and Ed Jennings (Image: Rob Jones)
