A tree that was blown over onto a BMW when gale force winds hit the UK was rotting inside, this paper has been told.

The tree at the junction between Hilldrop Road and Brecknock Road toppled over after Storm Agnes made landfall on September 27.

Pictures shared with this paper show the tree lying across the road and on top of a BMW on the evening it fell.

This paper understands that there was "internal decay" at the base of the tree.

The tree was last inspected by Islington Council in 2020 as part of is three-year inspection cycle.

The tree was cleared from the road the next day, and council officers met with car owners to provide them with details of how to claim.

The council has since examined other trees in the area, and has not identified any further issues.
