Twenty-four Islington Church of England churches will receive £600,000 in grants this year to help cut use of electricity and gas.
The churches are going environmentally friendly and using the cash to install solar panels, LED lighting and modern heating systems. Collectively, the projects could save over 100 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year.
The money is coming from Islington’s own grant charity Cloudesley, as well as £45,000 from the Allchurches Trust.
St James’s Church in Clerkenwell is one establishment to benefit from the money. It has changed to energy efficient LEDs.
Co-minister Rev Mark Jackson said: “We have wanted to make our church more environmentally efficient as we seek to be good stewards of God’s creation.
“We are so grateful for the grant from Cloudesley, which has allowed us to change all our church lights to LED.”
