New traffic restrictions, cycle routes and “pocket parks” are to be put in place around Caledonian Road.

Islington Council has proposed the changes as part of its plan to create a “liveable neighbourhood” in the area.

Blundell Street will be the focus of new traffic restrictions, which will see all motorists except permit holders barred from cutting across the street.

A “walking and cycling” route will also run down the road, with a similar scheme proposed around nearby Bingfield Park.

These routes aim to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in roads which connect Caledonian Road and York Way.

The proposals come shortly after Islington Council announced it would be extending cycleway 50, which currently connects Finsbury Park to Holloway Road, down Caledonian Road.

The authority has said plans for a further cycling route in Copenhagen Street will be revealed in the near future.

Other changes currently planned include new green spaces in Frederica Street and York Way Gardens, as well as “pocket parks” in roads between Carnoustie Drive and Caledonian Road.

The council will contribute £1.25 million towards the project, with a further £350,000 coming from the Mayor of London.

A public consultation on the proposals opened today (February 19) and will run until March 17.
