Hire e-bike parking spaces have been introduced in 10 places across the borough – with the aim of stopping bikes being left scattered on pavements.

Introduced by Islington Council, these bays will be for users of Lime and Forest e-bikes, the borough's only hire e-bike companies.

Each bay can hold up to 10 bikes.

Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s executive member for environment, air tuality and transport, said in some cases they are seeing bikes "parked in a way that obstructs pavements and roads".

She added: "Introducing bike parking spaces directly supports our efforts to create a more equal borough, ensuring that local people can continue to enjoy travelling via e-bike while keeping pavements and roads accessible."

By summer, the council plans to add 50 more bays to its network, with a long-term target of 250 bays.

A spokesperson from Lime said: "Lime recognises the importance of preventing pavement obstructions and welcomes the use of dedicated parking locations to provide riders with safe and responsible places to leave bikes wherever they cycle."

A spokesperson from Forest added: "We’re thrilled to see Islington taking bold action to begin reallocating space for dockless e-bikes, given the significant demand for our service in the borough since 2021."
