Nearly 500 private properties in Islington are empty, it has emerged.
The council is urging residents to report properties they think are unoccupied as part of a national campaign.
It says the homes could provide much-needed accommodation for 1,500 people.
Cllr James Murray, executive member for housing said: “Islington Council agrees with Shelter and the Empty Homes Agency that many empty homes should be brought back into use.
“If residents know of an empty property please tell us and we’ll investigate.”
Islington Council fears empty homes could fall into disrepair and attract arsonists, squatters and vandals.
The council has achieved some success in restoring vacant properties.
Star Estates purchased a derelict property in Crayford Road, Holloway, and was awarded a council grant so it can provide help for visually impaired people.
In 2010, Islington Council also used the threat of a compulsory purchase order over nine poorly maintained empty flats in Whitecross Street, Clerkenwell.
