A-level results: Tears of joy as Highbury School posts great results despite building work

There were tears of joy at Highbury Fields school as students recorded a 100 per cent pass rate at A-level for the third year running.

It marked a positive end to what has been a tricky year for the school in Highbury Hill, with lessons going on alongside building work on their multi-million pound refurbishment – set to be finished in time for the Autumn term.

Headteacher Gladys Berry said: “We are really pleased everyone has down so well again. Everyone has worked really hard, even despite the building work and they have carried on as normal.”

Yagmur Ozcan, 18, from Highbury New Park, got As in geography psychology and an extended project on sleep deprivation, plus a B in biology.

She said: “I’m going to celebrate and get ready for university. I phoned my family and they were screaming down the phone. They’re very proud. I’m going to study biology and psychology at reading. Hopefully that will lead to me becoming a teacher.”

Meanwhile Cedric Tshibola, 18, got an A in English Literature and Bs in history, sociology and his extended project about the role of women in modern warfare. Now he is off to Kent to study war in the hope of becoming a military expert in the UN or Nato.

Cedric, whose favourite conflict is the Seven Years War, said: “I’m really happy – they’re better than I expected. I’m going to celebrate with my family now – my mum will be so please. She prayed for this.”

Another success story from the school, 18-year-old Nevin Pirgali only found out her results while on holiday in Cyrpus. Her A in Turkish and Bs in chemistry, biology and psychology have earned her a place studying pharmaceutical science at Kings College London.

Anna Burrage, chair of the school governors, said: “We are delighted with the results - the staff have done a fantastic job in a very challenging year.”
