The head of one of Islington’s most renowned playhouses has picked up a prestigious international honour as he celebrates 10 years on the job.
Michael Attenborough, artistic director of the Almeida Theatre, was handed the Award for Excellence in International Theatre by the International Theatre Institute on Tuesday.
In March Mr Attenborough - son of Lord Attenborough - marked a decade years at the helm of the theatre, in Almeida Street, Islington, where he is currently directing the Naples-set drama Filumena.
He said: “I am honoured and flattered to be given this prestigious award from such a distinguished and hugely respected organisation, particularly when previous winners have included directors such as Peter Brook and Michael Grandage and the panel contains many admired theatre practitioners.”
Mr Attenborough has enjoyed great success since taking up the post in 2002, when he moved from the Royal Shakespeare Company. His recent productions have included last winter’s Neil LaBute-penned hit Reasons to be Pretty.
