A group of comedians who crowdfunded a pub with £46,000 worth of donations will launch their new venue next week – called The Bill Murray.

Angel Comedy Club decided they needed a new home earlier this year after outgrowing a small room above the Camden Head boozer.

So they approached the landlord of the old Mucky Pup in Queen’s Head Street off Essex Road, and to their delight he agreed to sell them the lease – turning down a gastropub chain to do so.

The Bill Murray – named after the comedy legend – will open its doors for the first time on Wednesday.

Club director Dec Munro told the Gazette how the name was chosen.

“We thought about a few and felt that he’s someone a huge amount of people love,” he said. “We’re also the London home of Second City which is where he started out so it felt like that might be cool, and his spirit seems like one the pub would be lucky to encapsulate.”

The club will still hold events at the Camden Head, and will host free events seven nights a week at both venues.
