The iconic Angel Wings will soar over the new-look Angel Central after a 10-year-old campaigner faced down developers who wanted the sculpture removed.

Olivia Gordon Clark successfully fought plans to scrap the wings and at the town hall last night updated designs were signed off. They will see the wings raised by 3-metres so they hover over a new footbridge facing Liverpool Road.

Speaking after the meeting, Olivia said: “The feeling that the Wings are going to be staying at [Angel Central] is amazing.

“This means that the people of Islington are not going to wake up one morning to find the Wings suddenly under construction.”

The wings will be temporarily moved while the bridge is built.

Councillors reacted positively to the changes made to CBRE’s plans, and approved the new development.

Cllr Martin Klute (Lab, St Peter’s), chair of the planning committee, said: “We are delighted CBRE have come up with what seems to be the ideal solution.”
