TWO young Archway footballers are starring alongside Wayne Rooney in a TV talent search for the county’s most skilful street striker.

Jamie Gallagher, 20, from MacDonald Road, and Jay Miles, 19, who lives in Pemberton Terrace, have made it through to the final 14 of Sky1’s Coke Zero Street Striker.

On Sunday the talented pair will go head to head against 12 others in the second episode of the four-part knock-out show, which is presented by Manchester United and England superstar Rooney.

Jamie, who recently got engaged and cannot wait to play football for a living, said: “Football means everything to me – it’s something I live for. When I’m playing football, every stress I have disappears.

“Having the chance to be a finalist on Coke Zero Street Striker and show Wayne Rooney my skills is amazing – I’m going to give it everything I’ve got because I’m here to win.”

Jay currently earns his money as a gardener, but dreams of making it as a professional footballer.

He said: “I watch football, read about it every day and play whenever I can. I’ve been inspired by my dad – he was always watching and playing football when I was younger.

“I’m a big fan of Coke Zero Street Striker and being chosen as one of the finalists is a dream come true – I’m just going to work hard and show Wayne what I can do.”

Among the tough street football challenges the two Islington hopefuls will be taking on is the show’s infamous Tyre Challenge, where contestants have to dribble between an array of fast-rolling tyres.

The eventual winner will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to show off his skills on the pitch at Boca Juniors - the legendary football club in Argentina, home of street football.

Rooney, who is currently out injured after his well publicised contract wrangle with Manchester united, said: “Jamie and Jay did very well to be selected for the show as the level of competition this year is tougher than ever before.

“I was really impressed by their technique and touch in the auditions. There are some great street football challenges on the show, though I can tell you from experience that they’re not easy.

“All the challengers this year are going to have to really up their game.”

- The next episode will be shown at 7pm on Sunday.
