Fed-up campaigners are taking matters into their own hands and calling on the owner of the historic Archway Tavern to reopen the pub after three dry years.

The boozer has been closed since a failed stint as rock venue The Intrepid Fox in 2014, but the area has been given a major facelift since then.

The tavern, which famously featured on The Kinks’ Muswell Hillbillies album sleeve in 1971, looms over the new pedestrianised Navigator Square and its continued closure has left neighbours furious.

Dr Sardar Imtiaz, whose family owns the lease, has remained silent on any future plans and is understood to have no interest in it operating as a business.

The square was officially opened in August by Jeremy Corbyn, whose name was engraved on a £1,632 plaque on the ground.

Now, councillors in the area – Kaya Comer Schwartz, Marian Spall and Dave Poyser – as well as chair of the Archway Town Centre Group Jan Tucker are determined to make 2018 the year it reopens and are calling on the owners to show some community spirit.

“The pedestrianisation of the square has been a great success,” said the councillors. “The pub has always been a major local landmark, but residents keep asking: ‘When will it open?’

“We fully understand the building is a commercial operation, but local people have waited a very long time for it to be open.

“The Archway Tavern has been part of the history of the area, and the building is iconic.

“We are really proud of the diverse local and community minded businesses in Archway. It would be brilliant to have a well managed tavern.

“Our new year wish is that in 2018 the pub serves community spirits.”

The top floor of the building now operates as Koli’s, a nightclub venue. Around the back is the Tropical Bar, which hosts private events.

Rooms on the second floor are also let out by 101 Estates. In May, 101 Estates director Carlos Floriz told the Gazette the pub would be reopening in November as a cocktail bar – something that has not materialised.

The Gazette has attempted to contact Dr Imtiaz, but has had no response.
