The council-approved shortlist of five includes Navigator Square (a nod to Archway’s Irish community and the “navvies” who built its roads); Orchid Square (orchidologist Benjamin Williams grew orchids on the Archway Tower site); Peoples Place (previously dominated by vehicles, the square has been “reclaimed” for the community; Telford Square (after engineer Thomas Telford, whose “innovative” techniques were used to build Archway Road); and Tollhouse Square (a nod to the toll gate there between 1813 and 1864).

Hillrise Cllr Dave Poyser – who will be mayor of Islington next year – had previously circluated Squarey McSquareface.

People can vote online or in person at seven designated locations across the borough until October 6.
