Arsenal took on Manchester City in the 2018 Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Read Arsenal reporter Layth Yousif’s PLAYER RATINGS from the showpiece match.

Arsenal:

David Ospina: 6 – Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger called him ‘world class’ but he had no chance with the opening goal.

Laurent Koscielny: 6 – Simply not good enough when Arsenal needed a captain and a leader to turn into a legend. But he was far from the only one.

Aaron Ramsey: 5.5 – Nowhere near as effective as he needed to be as memories of his winning goals in two FA Cup finals faded into the distance on a sad day for the club.

Jack Wilshere: 6 – Bright start early on as he drove at the heart of the City defence but faded after City’s first goal but never gave up trying.

Mesut Ozil: 5 – Much as he is admired when he is on song, he has to take criticism when he fails. And against Manchester City when a big performance was required from him he was anonymous.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 5.5 – Has pace to burn but was largely ineffective in his attempts to break through the City defence.

Nacho Monreal: 6 – It was a blow to see the Spaniard hobble off after only 26 minutes as through his consistency and new-found attacking threat he has been a mainstay of the team.

Shkodran Mustafi: 6 – Complained of a nudge from Aguero in the build-up to the goal then appealed for offside in vain. Yet the real issue was his defending was simply not good enough to prevent the Argentine from breaking free to score the opener. Disappointing from the former Schalke man as he once again showed inconsistency at the heart of the Gunners backline.

Calum Chambers: 6 – Played as part of a back three but was unable to dominate City’s attacking trident of Sane, Silva and Aguero

Hector Bellerin: 5.5 – Ineffective defensively and in attack. Capable of so much more

Granit Xhaka: 5.5 – Not a holding midfielder nor a box-to-box player, nor an effective creative talent. Unfortunately.

Substitutes:

Sead Kolasinac: 5 – Appears to have regressed since his lively opening few months at the club. Sad to see his confidence flagging when his energetic goalscoring performance at Wembley against Chelsea in the Community Shield back in August 2017 is recalled.

Danny Welbeck: 5 – On for the disappointing Chambers but failed to make an impact.

Alex Iwobi: 4 – Replaced the tiring Ramsey but might as well have not been on the pitch for all he did.

Manchester City:

Claudio Bravo: 7 – Although he has slipped down the pecking order dramatically after taking too long to settle in English football last term, the sweeper-keeper could claim an assist in a Wembley final after his long ball foxed the Arsenal defence.

Kyle Walker: 7 – The former Spurs man will have enjoyed his day out at Wembley but the truth was he had an easy game.

Danilo: 7 – Solid and unflustered.

Vincent Kompany: 9 – A solid presence in City’s defence. As he always has been. Injuries may have been cruel to him over the last few years but he has to be considered one of the club’s greatest-ever players. Another no-nonsense performance to land yet more silverware. Deserved his goal and the trophy.

Ilkay Gundogan: 7 – Credited with an assist for Kompany’s goal when he should have been targeted defensively.

Sergio Aguero: 9 – City’s world-class forward proved too much for Mustafi and the Arsenal backline after using his nous to power through before calmly finishing to put the Citizens 1-0 ahead with a lob over Ospina. Could have grabbed a second with another cheeky chip over Ospina.

Kevin de Bruyne: 8.5 – Another world class talent. Even if he didn’t have to prove it today.

Leroy Sane: 8.5 – Lively show from the left-sided dangerman, troubling first Monreal, then his replacement Kolasinac.

David Silva: 9 – The left-footed magician has been simply superb for City since the day he signed, Fully deserved his goal and winners medal.

Nicolas Otamendi: 8 – Could have been a weak link but was allowed to dominate instead. He had an excellent game.
