Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was delighted with the intensity shown by his players as they won the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday

The Gunners beat Chelsea 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes on an energy-sapping afternoon.

The long-serving Frenchman also praised the contribution of Sead Kolasinac who influenced proceeedings greatly after coming on.

The free signing from Schalke 04 netted Arsenal’s equaliser after Victor Moses put Chelsea ahead just after the break.

Chelsea were down to ten men moments before Kolasinac’s towering header sent the ball past Thibaut Courtois’ despairing dive after Pedro was sent off by referee Bobby Madley with ten minutes remaining.

Speaking after the game Wenger said: “I’m very happy because the quality of the game was very good and so was the intensity.

“We were 1-0 down and we came back to add to the continuity of our game last season.”

Wenger was keen to downplay his side’s victory over the Premier League champions as the win clinched Arsenal’s second pre-season bauble in a week after lifting the Emirates Cup last weekend.

Looking towards Friday evening’s opening league match against Leicester City at the Emirates Wenger explained the win was more “an encouragement rather than a disappointment – nothing more than that.

“We‘ve had some bad starts over the last four years but we’ve had intensity this summer that we need – then we can see where we go [in terms of challenging for the Premier League].

“If you look at the Premier League there are ten teams that can win it – we need to maintain our togetherness.

“We play Leicester on Friday who have had the same team for four years now.”

However the Frenchman was more effusive about his new defender Kolasinac, as he hailed him by saying: “There are players who are pumped up in the gym and players who are born strong. And he is the second part.

“Kolasinac had a very interesting debut last weekend against Sevilla in the Emirates Cup but this week he was outstanding.

“He is born strong. I took him because of his attitude.

“Now the Premier League does not tolerate it if you do not have a combination of talent and a determined attitude.

“He has that and he is also supported by a strong body.”

Olivier Giroud struck the winning penalty to send Arsenal into raptures in front of 83,325 at Wembley Stadium.
