Arsenal FC gave departing boss Arsene Wenger the perfect send-off on Sunday for so many reasons, from the 5-0 rout of Burnley, to the perfect tone to the post-match ceremony, to the goodbyes afforded club legends Vic Akers and Alex Scott as well as captain Per Mertesacker.

But there was another reason why the club received praise from so many supporters.

During Wenger’s lap of honour after the match the big screens at the Emirates showed a cannon consisting of the names of fans who had sadly passsed away during the course of the 2017-18 season.

An Arsenal spokesman told the Islington Gazette: “It’s the second year we have produced the Arsenal cannon which includes the names of fans who have passed away during the course of the season.

“The cannon design was used on the big screens in the stadium on Sunday and also in the matchday programme.

“We’re very proud to be recognising and paying our respects to our late fans in this way.”

Loyal fan Pat Rainsford, tweeted: “My cousin Donal Morrissey’s name [is] proudly included.”

All contacts for the late fans will be receiving a copy of the matchday programme soon from Arsenal.
