Skipper Alex Scott says the senior players have a duty to help instil a winning culture among the new generation at Arsenal Ladies.

Gunners boss Pedro Martinez Losa has included a number of teenagers in the first team this season, such as midfield pair Leah Williamson and Jade Bailey and defenders Vyan Sampson and Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Chloe Kelly, who is only 17, has featured regularly in the Gunners’ Continental Cup group games and was among their scorers in Sunday’s 4-0 victory at Millwall Lionesses.

And Scott – who has been part of numerous league and FA Cup-winning sides during her Arsenal career – feels the old guard can help the club’s new crop of youngsters to continue those successful habits.

“It’s been hard the last couple of seasons, with a whole group of players leaving – people like Steph Houghton and Ellen White, probably seven or eight who have been starting players,” said the 30-year-old full-back.

“We’re now at the stage where we’ve brought through young players who have been at the club since they were nine, and that’s great because they know the history of Arsenal and what that means.

“I know how much it meant to me when I broke through and there were people like Marieanne Spacey at the club, who had been winning things for years.

“It’s up to people like me and Emma Byrne and Rachel Yankey to make sure we pass that on – the importance of winning trophies at Arsenal.

“We haven’t just gone out and bought players, like some other clubs have – we’re trying to bring them through as well and Pedro’s got a good mix and a good philosophy.”

With a Continental Cup quarter-final place already assured by their 2-1 win over Reading three days earlier, Scott sat out the Gunners’ victory on Sunday.

Three early goals in the space of just five minutes meant that Losa’s side were always in control, with veteran Yankey supplying the cross for Dan Carter to head in a 10th-minute opener.

Yankey made it 2-0 with a curling free-kick two minutes later and Kelly then grabbed the Gunners’ third goal, pouncing on an error by Millwall goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill.

Carter went close to increasing her tally in the second half, but Arsenal had to settle for just one more goal, with Dominique Janssen heading in her first for the club from Yankey’s 75th-minute corner.

The Gunners are back in Women’s Super League action on Saturday, when they travel to Liverpool, kick-off 5.30pm.
