Arsenal’s annual charity matchday returns to Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The scheme sees Arsene Wenger and his players donate a day’s wages to the Arsenal Foundation. This cash is then used to support local and international causes.

Past Islington recipients have included disability charity Centre 404 in Holloway and Islington Boxing Club in Hornsey Rise, while money is also used to refurbish pitches in schools and estates across north London.

With Gooners also able to drop spare change in collection boxes at the game against Newcastle, the expected final figure will be about £250,000.

Speaking ahead of the game, Wenger said: “Our charity matchday is a big part of what we stand for.

“What makes a club survive in the long-term is not always the top of the tree but its roots. It may not always be the most glamorous part but, in my opinion, it is the most important. Of course my immediate priority on Saturday is to win our match, but I am very proud of what we do off the field too.”
