IT’S been a big week for football, but as always the most important things are what happen on the pitch – and Arsenal notching up two more vital wins.

Tuesday’s win over Everton was the kind of victory that will send confidence flooding through the dressing room. They had to come from behind and really looked up against it with 20 minutes to go, but in the end won the game fairly comfortably, that shows you how good this side si.

And while it has mostly been Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas who have provided the inspiration this season, on Tuesday Andrey Arshavin came off the bench to show he can also be a big player for this team.

With Manchester United and Chelsea also winning it was just so crucial that Arsenal kept up the momentum after such a punishing schedule.

Obviously Arsene Wenger’s decision not to sign any players in the transfer window has disappointed some fans, especially in the light of how much Chelsea and Liverpool spent on Monday.

However, they are clubs who have both had difficult seasons and the signings are needed. Arsenal are going well and Arsene is happy with the squad he has got. Will he need more defensive depth? There is a chance he will but he is obviously hoping that Thomas Vermaelen is going to be fit again sooner rather than later and that his other three central defenders stay fit.

The 50million fee of Fernando Torres’ move is pretty incredible. Chelsea have that kind of money though, and they wanted their man and got him. Whether it can give them a chance to get back into the title race only time will tell. Those two games against United are going to be pivotal.

Liverpool signing Andy Carroll is another interesting one – they had the money from Chelsea, but 35m for a player who has played for what, six months in the top flight and has had one England cap? That’s a huge gamble.

When you think David Villa, who just helped win the World Cup for Spain and has scored goals regularly for years, cost Barcelona less, you can see that something somewhere is not quite right.

It certainly makes for an interesting game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and Chelsea know they can’t afford to slip up at all if they are to stay in contention.

Arsenal will have played at Newcastle by then and it could be a good time to play them seeing as they have lost Carroll.

Arsenal should be good enough, and are still right in the title race. It’s going to be fascinating, and Arsenal need to keep the pressure on and hope United slip up. They still have to play Chelsea twice, remember. It’s going to be interesting.
