The body of a man in his early 30s was found in Regent’s Canal in Islington this morning.
He was spotted by the public at about 10.15am at the Battlebridge Basin, near Tiber Gardens, Scotland Yard said. Passers-by called police, who pulled the man out of the water a few minutes later.
The Met originally believed the man’s death was suspicious, but detectives later said they were treating the incident as “non-suspicious and unexplained”.
Photographs taken from offices overlooking the canal towpath, part of which was shut off while police investigated, showed officers beside a barge.
The canal had been reopened and cleared of police by 2pm, but tape still blocked access to the towpath from a nearby estate.
It comes six months after Italian national Sebastiano Magnanini was found dead in the same stretch of water.
In January, Paul Williams, 61, of no fixed abode, and Michael Walsh, 41, of Wharfdale Road, pleaded guilty to preventing lawful burial in connection with ethe find, while Walsh and Daniel Hastie, 22, of no fixed abode, admitted conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.
