In a weekly feature, we profile a company doing business here in Islington. This week, we hear from Indiebeer – a new craft beer shop and tasting room in the Holloway Road.

Holloway Road’s burgeoning craft beer scene grew last month with the opening of tasting room and shop Indiebeer.

Newlywed owners Owen and Clare Daniel love the drink, but thought there was a gap in the market for independent retailers.

“There are thousands of pubs in London that aren’t catering to people’s needs,” Owen said. “There’s a huge range of beers around which just aren’t getting sold.”

That’s not the case in their shop. Eight fridges, organised by type rather than brand, are stocked with 230 beers.

Seventy percent are from UK brewers, including 15 London breweries. Prices range from £2.20 for a 330ml can to £25 for a speciality Belgian.

After 17 years spent working for Bank of America Owen wanted a change, so spent six months with Clare travelling the USA, “the home of craft beer”, to learn more about it.

Two years spent saving, helped by a government-funded start-up loan, gave them the money to open.

Open midday to 9pm six days a week, closing at 6pm on Sundays, they’re also licensed to do tasters of up to 2/3 of a pint.

It comes a few months after the opening of House of Hammerton, the Islington brewery’s first pub, in the same road.
