Celebrations are kicking off across Islington after the Olympic torch made its journey through the borough this morning.
Jubilant scenes greeted the flame as it entered the borough via Wharfdale Road in King’s Cross at around 8am and travelled through Holloway, Highbury, Islington, Finsbury and Farringdon.
A spectacular aerial dance performance kicked off when the torch arrived at Islington Town Hall in Upper Street where the torchbearers gathered on the steps and comedian David Walliams took hold of the flame.
After handing over the torch to former army major Phil Packer, Mr Walliams tweeted: “Wow! I loved that sooooo much! Such a great response. And no-one made a lunge!”
Some of the biggest crowds were seen in Farringdon shortly before the torch left the borough on its journey into the City at around 9am.
A huge sporting event for children and young people is about to start at Highbury Fields, featuring 19 different Olympic and Paralympic sports, live stage performances and London 2012 mascots Wenlock and Mandeville.
A free family fun day at the London Canal Museum in New Wharf Road, King’s Cross, is already underway.
