A quick-thinking driver could have prevented a disaster when he popped a giant beach ball that had come loose in this morning’s storm and was bouncing around a busy roundabout.

The 10 metre wide art installation, which had been on top of the White Collar Factory Building, in Old Street, since March, made a dramatic bid for freedom when is was dislodged by the 70mph winds brought by the St Jude’s storm which battered the capital overnight and this morning.

The enormous sphere was causing chaos as it bounced around the Old Street roundabout in Finsbury, but luckily a council worker spotted the danger and took action.

He parked his car next to through bothersome ball, which was deflating, blocking it in and stopping any potential road accidents it might have caused.

A spokesman for Islington Council said: “At Old Street, quick-thinking council staff averted a possible accident by removing this potential hazard from the road.”
