A black death burial ground is to be opened up to the public in Clerkenwell giving residents a chance to take part in the dig.
The lost chapel was unearthed by Crossrail archaeologists who found 25 skeletons under the Charterhouse in Charterhouse Square in 2013 and residents will get the chance to dig deeper into this pocket of lost history.
The community dig will take place during a Festival of Archaeology at the Tudor mansion from July 18 to 25 with a public viewing on July 24 and 25 with opportunities for children to take part in specially constructed archaeology dig boxes.
A series of public lectures will also be held by leading historians and archaeologists.
Charlie Hobson, the master of the Charterhouse, said: “We’re delighted to give the public the chance to explore the hidden history of the Charterhouse which has been a charity at the heart of London for over 400 years.
“Our charitable mission continues to this day and the 40 brothers who live on site will be following the dig closely.”
