Postal workers are celebrating after Royal Mail bosses decided not to close a subsidised creche at their sorting office.

The plan to close the nursery at the Mount Pleasant Sorting Office, in Farringdon Road, Farringdon, sparked fears that staff with children would be forced to quit their jobs.

A campaign to save the crche last summer won support from Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury. Now Royal Mail has announced it will keep the nursery open.

Lloyd Harris, branch secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at Mount Pleasant, said: “It’s a great victory for common sense and the unions.

‘‘For now there are enough places and no one should have to leave their job.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We are in discussions with the CWU and the current childcare provider about the best way to continue to offer this service to our employees. We are currently undergoing a major refurbishment of our Mount Pleasant mail centre site and we are proposing to refurbish the crche as part of this work, although the timetable for this work has not been confirmed.”
