Clerkenwell’s Postal Museum has been named one of the best in the country.
It only fully opened in September last year, but has been shortlisted for the Museum of the Year award.
The Postal Museum, in Phoenix Place, celebrates the impact of mail on UK society as the oldest “social network”.
It includes the underground Mail Rail ride, which replicates part of the journey driverless trains would travel from the old Mount Pleasant Mail Centre to Paddington. Mail Rail was open between 1927 and 2003. At its peak, four million letters a day would pass through Clerkenwell.
The Postal Museum is up against the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, Ferens Gallery in Hull, Glasgow Women’s Library and Tate St Ives.
If it wins, it will get £100,000: to be spent on museum improvements and accessibility. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on July 5.
