Comedy review: Coin-Operated Girl at the Camden People’s Theatre

Miranda Kane’s stand-up show is based on her seven years as an escort

�It is fair to say my friend – up from the quiet of the countryside for a few days in the big smoke – raised her eyebrows when I said we were off to see a show in which an ex-escort described seven years in “the business”.

I then had to add, and by the way, her USP was the fact she was a BBW (Big, Beautiful Woman).

At that point, I was worried whether those eyebrows – now most definitely into the depths of her hairline – would ever return to their usual spot after Miranda Kane’s Coin-Operated Girl.

So, as we settled into our seats, I was probably more nervous than Kane was for this, the first ever performance of her years as “Melody”.

Kane was actually exceedingly calm as she took the audience at the Camden People’s Theatre through her introduction to the escorting world – starting with a few clicks on Google after a friend said men wanted her for her body. “I didn’t even want my body,” she quipped, “and I had 25 stone of body.”

Over the next 60 minutes, she introduced words and concepts to my vocabulary I had never even considered being a word or concept, explained the problems of Movember for a lady of the night and described being paid to sit on a man and eat pizza – as you do – all with a dry sense of humour which had the audience laughing out loud.

The biggest problem, my country friend said afterwards, eyebrows now firmly in place, was actually the lack of detail.

The highlights of the show were the moments where Kane gave the audience a glimpse of the weird and wonderful characters she had met along the way, of which the pizza-loving Canadian was the perfect example.

But both of us agreed that the show was definitely a winner, and not just for the fact it lifted the covers on a world which is usually kept in the dark.
