Harry Kane’s header four minutes into the second half earned Tottenham Hotspur bragging rights in the 195th north London derby

Arsene Wenger couldn’t hide his frustration after watching Arsenal suffer a 1-0 loss away to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley this afternoon.

Harry Kane, who famously was told he wasn’t good enough by the Gunners as an eight-year-old, headed home the only goal of the game in the 49th minute.

Chances were few and far between in the first half, but Arsenal had the better of the openings without doing much when in dangerous areas.

Spurs improved a great deal after the break and squandered a number of opportunities, but Alexandre Lacazette should have equalised in stoppage time, only to fire wide when through one-on-one.

Wenger said: “The possession was 50/50 basically in this game and I think it should have been finished at half time for me. We missed opportunities on the counter-attack which are not missable at our level with the final ball.

“In the second half we should have lost the game in the early part by more than one goal and we were destabilised by the goal they scored.

“They had two or three opportunities where they could have scored, but in the final part of the game we should have come back to 1-1.

“Maybe it was not enough, but it was better than 1-0 so overall it is a mixed feeling because for long periods in the first half, with a bit more quality in our final pass we would have won the game.”

Opposite number Mauricio Pochettino praised his players after the victory despite it nearly going horribly wrong in stoppage time when Lacazette missed two excellent chances.

Kane’s header in the 49th minute proved to be the difference, but the match winner, Christian Eriksen, Heung-min Son, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Kieran Trippier all had further chances to extend Tottenham’s advantage.

Pochettino said: “We feel very proud. The performance was amazing and fantastic. I think when you analyse the 90 minutes, the team played so well.

“In the second half the first 25 to 30 minutes we played amazing football and we created a lot of chances. I think we had the capacity to push them and create many, many chances, but it was an amazing game and I’m very pleased.

“Our players deserve the full credit because they were fantastic so I congratulate them and tell them to keep going.”

Shkodran Mustafi remonstrated with referee Anthony Taylor after Kane’s goal – implying it was a foul by the Tottenham forward on Laurent Koscielny.

But Wenger added: “I have no complaints about the goal. I thought it (might be a foul) during the goal, but I watched it again and it was a regular goal and we can only look at ourselves on the goal.”
