Cllr Claudia Webbe likes nothing more than to promote the town hall’s radical green agenda. So she was all over the first National Clean Air Day yesterday.
Islington was the first London borough to adopt anti-engine idling policy in 2014. And in April, it launched the Archway “zero emissions network”, which encourages businesses to take cargo deliveries from bicycles.
However, the town hall is routinely criticised for allowing barbecues in Highbury Fields, which studies have found causes soaring levels of toxic fumes in one of Islington’s most popular green spaces.
But Cllr Webbe, Islington’s transport and environment leader, visited the newly pedestrianised Archway town centre, one of the most polluted zones in Islington, to promote National Clean Air Day yesterday.
She said: “Air pollution can have serious health implications, so it makes sense that we all do our bit to tackle it. We recognise this and are leading the way with new initiatives and policies to improve air quality, and pushing the government and City Hall to adopt the greenest policies possible.
“People might not realise they too can help in the fight to cut air pollution, from switching the car engine off when stationary to cycling or walking instead.”
