People are being invited to have their say on the future of the controversial Ashmount Primary School site.

As reported by the Gazette last year, the council plan to demolish the building in Ashmount Road, Archway, for make space for housing when pupils move to a new school in Crouch Hill in the autumn.

But local residents have complained about the move on the grounds the 1960s building should be saved and that the area already has too much housing.

In December, councillors from neighbouring Haringey wrote to education secretary Michael Gove asking him to halt the council’s plans.

Now, a consultation will be held on the proposed development.

Cllr Paul Convery, executive member for regeneration, planning, transport, said: “Islington needs new homes but we are equally aware of the sensitivities of local residents.

“So this consultation asks their views on a change of use for the surplus land and their comments on our planning brief.”

The exhibition and drop-in sessions will takes place at Hornsey Lane Community Centre from Wednesday 8 February to Friday 16 March. Residents then have until Tuesday 8 May 2012 to respond by post or online at www.islington.gov.uk/ashmount
