A couple who have been married a mighty 70 years enjoyed a kiss under a giant piece of mistletoe.
Dorothy and Eric Riley were the first couple to enjoy a smooch under the giant sprig, which turned a stretch of Upper Street, Islington, into a romance hotspot. To enhance the atmosphere outside the Old Post Office, Rev Simon Harvey of St Mary’s Church, opposite the site, switched on a set of festive lights and a sprinkling of magical snowflakes.
He said: “It was a great occasion and a there were a lot of couples there who had been married a long time.
“My wife and I had a kiss and we’ve only been married 28 years so we were looking for tips. Dorothy and Eric said one reason they’d had such a long and happy marriage was because they made sure they had a kiss every day.” Members of the public can kiss under the chandelier throughout the festive period, and can share their love stories via Twitter using the hashtag #LoveIslington. Tweets will be entered into a draw to win pairs of tickets for performances at The Almeida Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, or a film at the Screen on the Green. The draw will be made on January 9 .
