Arsenal fans arrested for fighting each other at Ipswich game

TWO Arsenal fans were being questioned today after being arrested on suspicion of affray when a fight broke out among away supporters at last night’s Carling Cup semi final defeat to Ipswich.
They pair were among five Gunners’ supporters arrested on the night.
The two men detained after the brawl in the away fans’ section of the Cobbold Stand were taken to Ipswich police station where they spent the night.
Police are currently questioning the 27-year-old from Potters Bar and the 28-year-old from London.
During the melee, which occurred around 15 minutes into the game, a 51-year-old man from London sustained a cut to the bridge of his nose.
Two other Arsenal supporters were charged after being arrested in unconnected incidents.
Gary Cardy, 35, of Bromley, was accused of possessing alcohol at a sporting ground in view of the pitch, while 19-year-old Vincent Payne was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer in the execution of his duty following an alleged incident near a bar in Ipswich at 10.45pm.
Both men are due to appear before Ipswich magistrates on January 24.
A 17-youth from Enfield received a reprimand after an incident related to the alleged disturbance in Princes Street after the game.
Meanwhile, a man from Cheshunt received a caution after being arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis near the Arsenal supporters’ section just before the game began.
Given the profile of the game there were around a 100 police on duty.
Superintendent David Skevington, the man in charge of the operation, said: “I am pleased with how things went. We spent a significant amount of time planning and preparing for the game. The strategy we had in place went according to plan.
“I would like to thank the people at the game. Most people were really well behaved and were able to enjoy a thrilling sporting event.”
