A bakery more than doubled the money lost from its stolen Poppy Appeal box.

Customers flocked to Jesshops Bakers, in Newington Green Road, on Saturday after seeing the Gazette’s story about the collection box.

Estimated to contain £50, the box was untied from the till and taken on Friday, October 30.

In response, “disgusted” owner Ken Jesshop pledged to bake 100 poppy cup cakes to be sold at £1 each on Saturday.

The majority went on the day - with a few remaining today.

Mr Jesshop, 74, said: “Saturday was actually a poor trading day for us, maybe because of the bad weather, but the cakes went fantastically well.

“We probably more than doubled what we lost, so obviously we are delighted.

“Some people paid more than £1 - one woman paid £4 for a cake.

“Others came in saying they didn’t want a cake, but put money in our new collection box anyway, so it shows how much attention the story got.”
