Blackstock Road in Finsbury Park was closed at the height of the evening rush hour while police investigated a suspicious item left on a 106 bus.
Officers were called to Rock Street, off Blackstock Road, at 4.50pm.
Journalist Rob Hastings said he heard a controlled explosion at 5.55pm, before which police had been telling people to stay inside.
Sniffer dogs were also brought in and businesses were told to close their shutters.
The road was declared safe and the road reopened at about 6.05pm.
