Darren Osborne, the alleged perpetrator of the Finsbury Park terror attack, sat back casually in his seat as shocking CCTV of the incident was played in court this afternoon.

The footage showed Makram Ali collapsing at Seven Sisters Road’s junction with Whadcoat Street early on June 19. Over the next couple of minutes, a big crowd gathered round the 51-year-old to help.

A van is then seen turning into the junction at speed, mowing straight over the stricken Mr Ali. He died in the attack, with nine others injured. A man is seen being carried and apprehended by the crowd.

Osborne, who denies murder and attempted murder, was expressionless as the video was shown to jurors in Woolwich Crown Court this afternoon. As prosecutor Jonathan Rees guided the court through the footage, 48-year-old Osborne was slouched in the dock with his arms rested on the back of the bench.

The court heard Osborne had originally targeted two areas on June 18. They were Grosvenor Square in Mayfair – where there had been a Muslim march – and Lewisham, where he asked a man for directions to the nearest mosque, before heading to Finsbury Park.

Cecil Pond, an engineer, encountered him in the Blackwall Tunnell, where Mr Pond had been forced to pull over due to a bump with another vehicle.

Osborne, he said, pulled up behind his car.

In a statement read out in court, Mr Pond recalled: “I asked: ‘What’s the matter, mate?’ He said he wanted directions to Finsbury Park. He was sweating and looked nervous.” He gave the directions, but added in his statement: “When I became aware of this incident, I felt very unhappy.”

Jamie Berridge, a chef, was waiting for an Uber at 262, Seven Sisters Road, just before 11.45pm. In his statement read out in the court, he said: “I was approached by a male. He asked if I knew where Finsbury Park Mosque is.

“I said: ‘I don’t know – why do you want to go there?’ He said there was some sort of protest. He then walked along to the bridge.” The attack happened half an hour later.

The court will hear from survivors of the attack when the case reconvenes tomorrow morning.

The trial continues.
