Eight violent teenagers – some wielding machetes and swords – have been sentenced after putting members of the public at risk of “grave harm”.

Police were called to Pultney Street, in Islington’s Barnsbury Estate, on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, after the youths were seen chasing another group.

Some were on foot, with others riding on mopeds and vehicles, while brandishing weapons such as knives, swords and machetes.

When police arrived at the scene there was no trace of any of the suspects. But officers from Islington Gangs Unit were able to identify eight of the youths involved through CCTV.

The teenagers have been jailed for over six years combined after they were sentenced at Blackfriars Crown Court last Tuesday. All had pleaded guilty at separate hearings in August.

They were:

Shahruk Sheraji, 20, of Hoxton Street, Islington – sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution for affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

Zuriel Hutson, 20, of Highbury New Park, Highbury – sentenced to one year in a young offenders institution for affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

Cavell Hutson, 20, of Highbury New Park, Highbury – sentenced to one year in a young offenders institute for affray.

Zachary Walker, 19, of Parkside Crescent, Holloway – sentenced to eight months in a young offenders institution for affray. He also pleaded guilty to a separate robbery, assault and theft charge and was given a total of 23 months.

A 17-year-old from Islington was sentenced to a youth rehabilitation order for 18 months, a 91-day curfew order and a community sentence for affray and possessing an offensive weapon.

A 17-year-old from Holloway was sentenced to a one-year intensive referral order for affray and possessing and offensive weapon.

A 16-year-old from Upper Holloway was sentenced to eight months detention and training for affray.

A 14-year-old from Islington was sentenced to an eight-month detention and training order for affray.

Det Cons Laura Connell, from Islington CID, said: “The youths involved in this matter acted with complete disregard for the community of Islington.

“They behaved in a manner which placed members of public at risk of grave harm. I hope these sentences serve as a strong reminder that the police take violent crime extremely seriously.”
