Police recovered a loaded firearm and suspected crack cocaine on a Holloway estate overnight.

Officers were on patrol at the Andover estate, off Hornsey Road following reports about heightened local tensions and attempted to stop two men who were part of a large group at the scene at around 9pm.

They ran away but were caught following a pursuit on foot. When searched, officers found the first man to be in possession of a bag containing what was allegedly a revolver holding four live rounds, one of which was loaded.

The 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

Another suspect, aged 20, was searched and found to have a substantial quantity of what is thought to be crack cocaine. He was then arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs. Both men remain in custody at a north London police station.

Inspector Martin Epps, of Islington borough, said: “It is too early to speculate about the intended use for this loaded firearm, but what we can say is that the streets are a safer place following its seizure.
