A mechanic caught with a stash of pornographic pictures and videos of children as young as two being abused has walked free from court.

Abbas Bedel, 53, of St Brelades Court, De Beauvoir, had 1,134 child porn images and videos on his home computer, including 154 of the most serious levels of abuse.

One of the videos lasted nearly 50 minutes and included an adult sexually abusing a seven-year-old child.

Police raided Bedel’s home on December 12, 2011, and found the vile pictures and movies downloaded on to his PC from file sharing websites. He admitted two counts of possessing child pornography at Southwark Crown Court.

Prosecuter Peter Zinner said: “There were multiple images of multiple incidents of abuse on a number of children.

“The material is one of an explicit form, types of restraint are used on the children and there are clear signs of visible distress.

“The children are clearly being put through a quite horrific ordeal.”

His defence barrister, Stephen Donnelly, said: “He is a man who is very humble and extremely embarrassed that he has, after a law abiding life, found himself in this position, engaged in such activity.

“Justice can be done by permitting Mr Bedel to prove to the court and society that he is capable of mending his ways.”

Bedel, described as a part-time mechanic, moved to the UK from Turkey several years ago and Mr Donnelly said he had struggled to make meaningful ties in the community. Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith handed down a 10 month jail sentence, suspended for two years, last Wednesday. He said: “I think the public would be better protected if you were treated rather than sentenced to prison, then released without treatment.”

Bedel will also be banned from having a job which might involve contact with children indefinitely.
