A man from Islington has been jailed for killing a woman whilst driving with no insurance.

Martin Appiah-Dankwah, 59, of Thornhilll Road was sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on Friday last week after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to causing death by dangerous driving whilst driving with no insurance.

On January 31 this year, Nicole Levy, 29, from Bounds Green was mown down as she waited to cross Priory Road in Muswell Hill with her boyfriend, James Hawkins.

The pair were waiting in the white hatched area in the middle of the road to cross the second carriageway when Appiah-Dankwah Renault Espace ploughed into them.

Mr Hawkins suffered only minor injuries but Miss Levy was pushed into the side of an oncoming vehicle, before striking the ground and suffering a devastating brain injury. She died two days later.

After the collision Appiah-Dankwah failed a roadside eye sight test three times.

He told the officer at the scene that he did not need glasses or contact lenses but he later admitted that he had attended hospital for his eyesight and also required contact lenses.

He also admitted driving with no insurance.

Appiah-Dankwah was jailed for 16 months, disqualified from driving for three years, told he must take an extended re-test and also had his vehicle forfeited.

Det Sgt Cheryl Frost, of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Appiah-Dankwah should never have been driving that day, he was not properly insured and his reckless behaviour has resulted in the devastating loss of a young woman who had everything to live for.”
